BLUE CONNECT joins the #30DayMapChallenge with a Black Sea story

As part of this year’s #30DayMapChallenge, BLUE CONNECT has put Burgas Bay and its wildlife under the spotlight with a new map showing how fishing activities overlap with Black Sea bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Bulgarian waters.

Débora Gutierrez, researcher of our partner University of the Azores (UAc) and coordinator of the Macaronesia Demo Site, was invited to attend the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), held this month in the Amazon region of Brazil. Her participation highlights the Macaronesia’ growing leadership in sustainable ocean planning and reinforces the relevance of the region in the global dialogue on marine conservation and coastal management.

On the occasion of International Black Sea Day – October 31, the community center “Izgrev 1909” in Burgas hosted the ninth edition of the initiative “The Sea and the Children”, aimed at encouraging children’s awareness and active engagement in protecting the marine and coastal environment. The initiative is carried out in partnership with regional libraries across the country and connects students from different cities through the creation and exchange of creative messages inspired by the Black Sea.
The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation’s BLUE CONNECT Team Participates in the First “Black Sea 2030” Forum

Burgas hosted the first edition of the international forum “Black Sea 2030: Partnership for a Sustainable Future,” marking the launch of an initiative that aims to become an annual platform for cooperation among the Black Sea countries. The event brought together representatives from governmental institutions, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the business sector.
Bioblitz in L’Albera demo site: exploring marine biodiversity by day and night

On 20 and 27 September 2025, a double marine bioblitz took place in L’Albera demo site, located within a Natura 2000 site in Llançà (Catalonia, Spain). The activity was organised by SUBMON, partner of the BLUE CONNECT project, as part of the project’s efforts to promote citizen engagement and participation and to improve knowledge on the biodiversity of Mediterranean coastal habitats.
1st National Workshop of the Guardians of the Sea in Maio Island, Cabo Verde

From 1st to 3rd October, our partners Fundação Maio Biodiversidade ONG and the PaMAR project facilitated the first national workshop of the Guardians of the Sea (GoS) program in Maio Island, Cabo Verde. The event gathered artisanal fishers involved in the GoS program and NGO partners from six islands, marking a key milestone in the program’s history.
