Scottish MPA Network
Why this site?
In Shetland communities have been engaged with data collection, to assist in the co-creation of spatial and temporal measures needed for strict protection management measures. This is of particular relevance within Scottish waters where an expansion of offshore marine renewables has the potentially to impact on the conservation status of this species, and where temporal and spatial management measures may be necessary.
Specific challenges exist around the monitoring and management of MPAs in remote locations found to the north and west of Scotland. This pilot will seek to develop innovative methods of data collection utilizing robotics to create cost effective detailed data in collaboration with communities.
This demo site will seek to engage communities in co-management and will seek to explore how traditional, novel and community monitoring data can inform management measures required for strict MPA management of mobile species.
The knowledge gained from this pilot project can be used to inform management across the European network of MPAs for cetaceans and lead to improved understanding of co-management challenges, gaps, and opportunities at the local, national, and European levels.
