The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation, in partnership with the Municipality of Burgas – a member of the LSWG Burgas Bay – organised the latest edition of the annual Biodiversity Carnival, one of the most recognisable educational events for children dedicated to nature in the coastal city. This year, the event focused on the marine life of the Black Sea.
As part of the BLUE CONNECT activities in Burgas Bay, the Carnival helps bring the sea closer to local communities, improving understanding of marine ecosystems and the connection between people and the marine environment. Through the process of creating costumes and participating in the parade, children and their families discovered the richness of life beneath the surface of the Black Sea. While most people are familiar with the beach, the remarkable diversity beneath the water and the benefits healthy marine ecosystems provide to society often remain unseen.
The event demonstrated the potential of creative and educational formats to reach a wide audience (around 450 people and 18 preschools and primary schools) and to bring marine topics into the public conversation. A live broadcast on Bulgarian National Television further extended the reach of the initiative, bringing Black Sea biodiversity to a nationwide audience.
By fostering curiosity, awareness and an emotional connection to the marine environment from an early age, the initiative helps nurture future generations of citizens who feel connected to and care for the Black Sea.
