The workshop’s primary objective was to discuss and validate the Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures, thereby reinforcing the values and best practices of the artisanal fishers participating in the program. On the final day, several national institutions involved in marine conservation and fisheries management participated in person and online, contributing to the dialogue and the dissemination of the GoS as a national initiative.
The Guardians of the Sea program was launched by FMB in 2016 to increase the engagement of artisanal fishers in marine conservation efforts. Those involved in the program are committed to collecting data on illegal activities and marine megafauna during their fishing activities. We hope that, in the near future, this data will be used by national authorities to improve the enforcement and management of marine areas, paving the way for the co-management of marine ecosystems.
