Local Stakeholder Working Groups Established: A Key Milestone for BLUE CONNECT

We are very glad to announce a significant milestone in the BLUE CONNECT project: the successful establishment of Local Stakeholder Working Groups (LSWGs) across the 12 Demonstration Sites (DS). This achievement was met in December 2024  and marks a pivotal step in fostering collaboration and building the foundation for effective site management and conservation.

Strengthening Networks and Collaboration

The LSWGs were established to either support existing networks or create new ones, ensuring diverse stakeholder representation. These groups include key actors such as marine protected area (MPA) managers, regulators, land and sea planners, local officials, sector representatives, NGOs, and scientists. By prioritizing inclusivity, the LSWGs aim to bring together voices from various sectors, encouraging a holistic approach to marine conservation.

A Flexible and Tailored Approach

Recognizing the unique characteristics of each of the 12 BLUE CONNECT DS, the LSWGs are designed to operate flexibly. Their roles and interactions will vary depending on the site’s specific stage of establishment, implementation, or management. Through regular meetings and interviews, stakeholders will collaboratively address gaps, share concerns, and refine tools to enhance site management. This process is rooted in trust and shared ownership, gradually building on previous efforts to achieve long-term conservation goals.

LSWGs in Action

The engagement process is already underway, with initial contact made with all members and preparations for the first meetings and interviews finalized. Some interviews have already been conducted, providing valuable insights for the scoping analysis and gathering stakeholder feedback on local needs. These interactions will play a crucial role in shaping the tools and approaches developed under BLUE CONNECT, ensuring they are grounded in the realities of each site.

Looking Ahead

The establishment of the LSWGs is more than just a milestone; it is the foundation for sustained collaboration and shared success. As we move forward, these groups will continue to evolve, playing a central role in improving site management and conservation. By fostering trust, inclusivity, and shared responsibility, the LSWGs embody the spirit of BLUE CONNECT and our collective commitment to marine protection.

Stay tuned for updates as the LSWGs continue their work, driving positive change across the 12 DS.
