Mission Ocean

What is Mission Ocean?

It is an European Union 2030 target, fully named the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”, which aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The Mission’s approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.

Cross-cutting enabling actions will support this objective, in particular broad public mobilisation and engagement and a digital ocean and water knowledge system, known as Digital Twin Ocean.

The Mission supports regional engagement and cooperation through area-based “lighthouses” in major sea/river basins: Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea. Mission lighthouses are sites to pilot, demonstrate, develop  and deploy the Mission activities across EU seas and river basins.

Blue Connect & Mission Ocean

BLUE CONNECT will contribute to both phases of Mission Ocean’s implementation, by piloting the Blueprint in the Demonstration Sites as well as considering its transferability, scalability and deployment.

The project will support Mission’s goal of connecting Europe’s citizens and communities with the ocean, seas, and waters by fostering broad ownership, education, and collaborative transitions to meet European Green Deal targets. This will be achieved by actively engaging stakeholders and citizens in co-creating conservation planning and management processes. To ensure wider uptake of solutions resulting from the BLUE CONNECT Demo sites, and their further replicability and deployment in the II phase of the Mission Ocean and Waters, BLUE CONNECT will organise a comprehensive knowledge transfer and uptake campaign which will be rolled out through Transferability Roadshow of solutions at sea-basin and inter sea-basin level.
