Azores Wave Conference: Advancing Ocean Governance and Coastal Protection in the Azores

On 13 March, 2026, the Azores Wave Conference took place at the University of the Azores (UAc) in Ponta Delgada, bringing together researchers, policymakers, civil society organizations, ocean advocates and the general public to discuss the future of coastal protection and sustainable ocean use in the Azores. The event was co-organized by the BLUE CONNECT partner University of the Azores, in collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation, the Save the Waves Coalition, and the Azores Save the Waves initiative.

The Azores Wave Conference emerged from an increasing urgency to look at the ocean with responsibility, recognizing its ecological, cultural, and economic value. In a context of growing pressure on coastal ecosystems and increasing tourism in Atlantic archipelagos, the initiative highlighted ocean waves a natural heritage that must be protected. Beyond their importance for surfing, waves play a critical role in marine biodiversity, coastal resilience, and the sustainable economic development of island communities.

The programme addressed a wide range of topics relevant to ocean governance and coastal sustainability in the region, including the value of Azorean waves a natural, cultural, and economic heritage, the challenges of responsible coastal tourism, the importance of ocean literacy and citizen science, and the role of public policy and integrated coastal management. Discussions also explored the opportunities and challenges related to World Surfing Reserves and the recognition of nature-based sports as cultural ecosystem services.

During the conference, Débora Gutierrez, representing the BLUE CONNECT Macaronesia Demo Site, participated in Panel 4: “Public Policies and Integrated Management of Marine Protected Areas.” The panel focused on governance challenges at regional and local levels, examining the roles of public institutions, civil society organizations, and local stakeholders in the protection and management of coastal ecosystems. Discussions also addressed the existing legal frameworks applicable to coastal protection and wave conservation in the Azores, contributing to a broader understanding of policy tools available to support sustainable ocean governance.

By participating in events such as the Azores Wave Conference, MACARONESIA DEMO SITE continues to strengthen dialogue between science, policy, and society, fostering innovative approaches to marine conservation and supporting the transition towards more participatory and effective management.  The conference also represented an important milestone for the project, marking an opportunity to engage with a broader public audience, raise awareness about marine conservation, and promote dialogue on the protection and co-management of coastal and marine ecosystems in the Macaronesia region.

🌊 Because the next big wave is the wave of change.
