Blue Connect – Macaronesia Demo Site Presented at the 4th European Symposium by NEREUS

The Blue Connect – Macaronesia Demo Site was proudly presented during the 4th European Symposium by NEREUS, held in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel – Azores, on October 2-3, 2025.

Representing our partner, the University of the Azores, Débora Gutierrez was invited to speak on the panel titled “Ocean Governance & Safety.” In her oral presentation, Preliminary Results on Biodiversity Indicators and Science-Based Tools to Set Conservation Objectives in Macaronesia, Débora shared early findings from the Macaronesia DS Connectivity Working Group under the Blue Connect initiative.

Her presentation at NEREUS offered valuable insights into the development of biodiversity indicators and the use of science-based tools to guide conservation strategies in the Macaronesia region. She also showcased how the Blue Connect framework is being applied in the area, particularly in the identification and prioritization of ecological subjects, assessing conservation status, and monitoring trends and events of changes. She also highlighted the recent field trip held in São Miguel Island, where in situ data sampling where made, to support and increase our understanding of this complex and important region.

This symposium provided an enriching platform for the Macaronesia Demo Site to engage with professionals and researchers from across Europe, all dedicated to finding sustainable, innovative solutions for ocean governance.

As we move forward, we remain committed to bridging science, technology, and conservation – working together toward a resilient and thriving ocean.
